Child on Chair

The Elegant Images style of children's photography.

Creating the perfect portrait of your child requires some techniques that are particular to photographing children.

Being patient with them. Some children will warm up to fun of photography immediately. Some won't!

At Elegant Images we Work on the child's schedule. Instead of picking up the camera right away, I will sit down at their level and play with them and get to know them. My style is to become their friend first, and they'll enjoy the session for the rest of the day.

Being in the child's world. What does your child like to do? Brining them in and letting them play with my teddy bears may make a cute photograph, but bringing his or her own teddy bear to a tea party will make it even more special. They'll talk and tell stories, and open up in a way they just can't do with a "stranger".

Focus on things that will change. A three-year-old child has that perfect, angelic face. She has expressions and that certain look that just screams out "I'm three". That's what changes very quickly as she grows, and will soon be forgotten as she moves into other stages. That's what I need to capture as a fine art photographer. I take the time to look for that perfect picture, that perfect expression to create the image that you will never take off your wall.

Focus on the face and the eyes. Children have the most amazing eyes. So while I'm a huge proponent of capturing a child in his or her natural environment, I also love beautiful face shots. These are the images that my clients love.

Capturing who they are, not just a standard photograph. When we are creating your child's portrait, it's important to understand that they will never be at that age again. My goal is to capture them at that particular time of their life, so that you will be able to remember that particular moment. You will know that's who she was at that moment, and that's what we strived to capture.
